Youth workers across Staffordshire are being invited to a special showcase day in Stafford to share tips and learn fresh ways to motivate young people.

All those involved in voluntary sector youth work can attend the event to network and share knowledge and experience and learn about provision by other groups in the county.

The event at Holmcroft Youth and Community Centre tomorrow will feature the launch of a new accreditation scheme which encourages children to clock up their positive experiences and compile a portfolio of their actions and achievements.

The Junior Passport 2 Success scheme is an extension of an existing project of the same name for teenagers in Staffordshire.

Both programmes are aimed at helping young people to make a positive contribution to society and recognise their achievements.

The event has been organised by a partnership between Staffordshire County Council's youth service and the charity Staffordshire Council for Voluntary Youth Service which works with the youth service to support voluntary groups that provide activities for eight to 12-year-olds in Staffordshire.

Councillor Eric Drinkwater, the cabinet support member for lifelong learning, said: "Some people lump youngsters together and label them sulky, lazy, even badly behaved.

"But there are loads of young people in Staffordshire doing some fantastic things for their community, for charities and for local people.

"By extending the youth service's Passport 2 Success programme to younger children it means they can record their activities and have their efforts recognised that little bit more."

Mark Koszak, senior youth worker and a member of the Staffordshire Council of Voluntary Youth Service, said: "As well as the passport scheme we'll also be launching five new curriculum guides to assist anyone who works with young people.

The guides suggest practical ideas which can be built into activities for young people."

The Junior Youth Work Showcase event takes place in the centre in Newland Avenue from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm.
