According to a study by road monitoring company Trafficmaster, several other stretches of road in the West Midlands were among the fastest flowing in the country.

The company found that the M45, from the A45 to the M1 junction 17, has an average speed of 68.9mph, while the M69, from Coventry to the M1 junction 21, had an average speed of 67.6mph.

The M40, from junction 16 of the M25 to junction 3A of the M42, had an average speed of 67.6mph.

But none of the region's roads could match the speeds on the country's fastest road – the A74(M) at Gretna – with average speeds of 72.2mph.

In contrast, the slowest road is the A4002 Tubbs Road in Harlesden, London, where the average speed is just 12.2mph.

The slowest motorway stretch was named as the A601(M) from Carnforth in Lancashire to the A6 in with a speed of 35.5mph, while the slowest A-road is the A818 Loch Lomond to Helensburgh road in Scotland.

Trafficmaster spokesman Philip Hale said: "When you need to get from A to B, the key is knowing which roads to use, and when, for the quickest journey."
