The Staffordshite Apprenticeship Awards has named 24-year-old Christopher Sharrard from Norton Canes as Apprentice of the Year.

Richard Morrall from Colton near Rugeley and Nicola Woodhall from Hednesford have also both scooped awards at the Moat House Hotel in Stoke-on-Trent after being recognised as the best in their field by high-profile judges from education and business.

The apprentices beat off strong competition from across Straffordshire and Richard Elsby, chief executive for the Staffordshire Providers Association, commented: "The awards evening was a huge success for everyone connected to apprenticeships.

"Over 300 people from over 40 different organisations were represented on the night and they were treated to an array of talented people, who have excelled in industries, such as business and engineering, retail, hairdressing and carpentry."

Christopher Sharrard, who was overall winner, is now managing director of the business which first employed him as an apprentice.

He said: ""I was surprised to find out I had been shortlisted for the Personal Achievement Award, but to then win that and another award was a real shock. One award feels like a fantastic achievement, but to walk away with two, especially the top prize of the night feels really amazing. It gives me even more encouragement to make my business a success and achieve my level three qualification."

Richard Morrall, aged 20, who is undertaking a hairdressing apprenticeship at Tamworth and Lichfield College has already had offers to work for firms in London.

Nicola Woodhall, who is undertaking an Advanced Apprenticeship in Customer Service, impressed judges with her ability to juggle her apprenticeship with a Management Training Scheme.

All three of the winners received a trophy as well as an i-Pod and Alton Towers tickets.
