Ben Footman, who currently patrols Great Wyrley, was awarded the Special Constable of the Year title for his commitment, dedication and positive attitude, at a special ceremony held this week.

The 21-year-old joined Staffordshire Police at Watling Street Neighbourhood Policing Unit in March 2005 and completed his training and competency evidence within one year.

During 2006 he made 28 arrests for a variety of offences, including public order, burglary and possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply.

Ben, whose girlfriend Joanne is a special constable in Kinver, is well known for his "cheetah-like running ability and carries out foot pursuits to arrest offenders without – being left gasping for breath.

Chief Superintendent Nick Howe, Chase divisional commander, said: "Ben has demonstrated consistent and exceptional performance in his role and always has a smile on his face, a keenness to make a difference and an unstoppable drive and energy.

"He is highly respected by his colleagues, both within the Special Constabulary and regular service and has an impressive arrest record demonstrating his enthusiasm, determination and courage."

He said Ben had developed skills beyond those traditionally associated with the Special Constabulary and was an excellent recruit.

He added: "Ben's commitment and attendance for duty represents a considerable contribution to the NPU and he can be relied upon to carry out duties not only at weekends but also during evenings, including peak demand times around the busy festive period.

"He takes a very active part in all types of policing duty within his NPU including attendance at a vast variety of specific policing operations, high visibility foot patrol within the community and also supporting colleagues on the Neighbourhood Response Team."

Ben also attends parish council meetings to engage with community partners.
