The premises, in Sandon Road, are currently licensed to sell alcohol between 10am and11pm on Monday to Saturday and 12noon to 10.30pm on Sunday.

But under new plans the snooker club wants a 24-hour alcohol licence and permission to hold indoor sporting events between 7.30pm and 1am Monday to Saturday and 7.30pm to 11pm on Sundays.

It also wants permission to play music and allow dancing until 1am from Monday to Saturday and 11pm on Sunday, and to provide late night refreshments between 11pm and1am every day. If accepted the hall will be open 24 hours a day, with drink available all day and all night.

The application was submitted by Kevin Andrews, licensee of the club, which currently opens between 11amand 11pm.

Police, fire and environmental health officers are all opposing the application.

Police claim that it does not meet the licensing objectives regarding the prevention of crime and disorder, public safety, prevention of public nuisance and protection of children from harm. Fire officers agreed that the application does not meet public safety objectivese.

The environmental health commercial team said that a similar application was made in 1994 and was refused.

In his application Mr Andrews claims the club can meet the required objectives.
