The 45-year old man, who has asked not to be named, discovered three medals had been taken, along with £640 and an iPod, in a burglary at his house in Birmingham Road, Lichfield.

Police today issued a warning that the medals may now be offered for sale.

The medals were awarded to former Royal Navy petty officer Joseph Bernard Noons, who served during the Second World War.

Two Second World War campaign medals and a medal awarded by the St John Ambulance Service were all taken during the raid, with all three bearing Mr Noons' name.

Now his grandson, who also served with the Royal Navy, wants them back.

"The medals were passed on to me when my grandfather died several years ago," said the man. "They are not of great financial value.

"I didn't think they would be of use to anyone else.

"An iPod and £640 cash was also stolen but I am not bothered about that, insurance will help to cover that."

The culprits broke in between 8am and 3pm on Monday. Anyone with information can contact Pc Nigel Tidmarsh on 08453 302010.
