The body of the 42-year-old victim, named locally as Andrew Owen, was found on grassland known as Coronation Gardens off Dudley Road. The victim may have been targeted by robbers.

The main Dudley to Wolverhampton Road was closed while police taped off the scene and set up a white tent following the grim discovery in the early hours of yesterday.

Police say the man – nicknamed "Tatter" – could have been robbed, although the motive for the attack is not clear.

They are investigating whether he became involved in an argument after being targetted during his walk home.

Detective superintendent Mick Treble today said a post mortem had been held. He confirmed the victim had not been shot or stabbed but would not reveal the exact nature of the injuries.

"I can't reveal the exact nature of the man's injuries at this stage but there is no evidence he was stabbed or died of a gun shot wound," he said. "We are treating it as a murder inquiry.

"This was an unprovoked attack on an innocent man making his way home."

Roads around the murder scene were closed all day yesterday although Dudley Road re-opened around 11pm last night. Forensic experts carried out a fingertip search of the area.

Police are keen to hear from witnesses who may have seen the man drinking in pubs in Sedgley on Saturday evening. He is described as between 5' 8'' and 5' 10" with short well-kept brown hair.

"We are appealing for anyone who has information to come forward," said Mr Treble. Witnesses can call police on 0845 113 5000 or Crimestoppers – 0800 555 111.

Shocked residents said it was normally a quiet area and Coronation Gardens was popular with dog walkers and children playing football.
