The 30-strong contingent from Wolverhampton's Sharon Ann Dance Academy will be competing with teams from countries including Japan, Russia, France and Spain at the International Dance Excellence tournament in California in April.

The English hopefuls include Karina Boyden, aged 12, who is making the trip with help from customers at a pub near her home in Dudley.

Regulars at the Freebodies Tavern, Kates Hill, have rallied round to help cover travel expenses by raising £200 through a charity karaoke and raffle. Karina is one of the youngest members in the squad, which consists of dancers aged 10 to 21.

The trip will be the latest high spot for Karina, a pupil at Ellowes Hall School, Lower Gornal, who has already performed at the Royal Albert Hall, the Sadler's Wells theatre, Eurodisney and the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton.

Proud mum Heather Boyden, of Smith Street, said Karina's success was a reward for her enthusiasm and dedication.
