Some months ago I entered a 40mph zone at 46mph and, being perfectly legal as regards road tax, insurance etc, was instantly traced on computer by our wonderful Road Safety Unit and within four days a letter arrived with options to pay.I was instantly given a £60 fine, three points and "back to Go". Most efficient. No complaints there. I broke the law and was rightly punished.

So, me being me, I decided to drive strictly observing all speed limits at all times.

To name but a few, I have seen tens of people chatting on phones while driving, have been overtaken by a horn-blaring salesman with a bacon sandwich in one hand, mobile in the other, satanic glaze in the eyes, and steering with his knees!

I have seen countless angry, foul-mouthed mothers with cars full of kids, no seat belts, vigorously waving two fingers out of the back window; the Yorkie Bar lorry driver cowboys in their 38 tonners completely filling my mirrors with his radiator; so-called bus drivers - just another name for boy racers, only faster.

I have been cut up, chopped off, threatened with violence and verbally abused on a daily basis. My parentage has been called into doubt, but I still trundle along at 30mph.

Where are the traffic patrol cars or the trusty friends in blue while all this is going on? Yeah, right, I haven't seen one for weeks.

But break the speed limit by entering a zone 6mph too fast for your first speeding offence in 50 years of driving and you will be instantly dealt with most efficiently. You have been warned.

To all the tailgaters, chill out - life's too short.
