Footballers' fine gesture
A round of applause is due to every one of the 150 or so people who braved the snow to spend "An Evening with Gordon Banks" at the Connaught Hotel on February 8 to support ex-Wolves player Ian Cartwright, who is now fighting cancer for the second time and who has been denied potentially life-saving medication by Dudley Health Service trust.

In particular I think the £1,000 donation from the present Wolves players and manager Mick McCarthy, who took the time to drop in, speaks volumes about those who are currently trying to take the club forward.
In these days when professional footballers are seen as selfish and uncaring, this gesture shows it is not always so.
A little known fact is that when Wolves won promotion in 1982/83 season with the team that included Ian Cartwright, the then manager, Graham Hawkins, wanted to sign Mick McCarthy.
Unfortunately, my fellow directors and I at the time were not able to do a deal with his club, Barnsley. Twenty-odd years later we can only wonder what might have been.
