An historic Wolverhampton pub is set to be bulldozed and replaced with houses, it was revealed today. The Shoulder of Mutton in Tettenhall Wood has been at the centre of rumours for several years about its uncertain future.
Today its owner, Banks's brewer Marstons, would not deny the Mount Road pub was facing demolition.
Drinkers have hit out at the brewery for keeping them, and the management, in the dark.
One regular said: "We all know that the pub is soon to be demolished and the word is that with its huge car park it has gone for about £4 million.
"No doubt the brewery would like it all to go through quietly so they can present a 'fait accompli' before any objections can be raised.
He added: "The pub will be missed. Like all pubs it has struggled in recent years but the new manager and his wife have been in just over a year and it has the air of a pub on the way up rather than on the way out.
"It also now does a big lunchtime trade with many older people regularly dining there."
There has been a pub in its location on Mount Road since the early 1900s. Twenty years ago the original building was knocked down and replaced with the latest structure.
Marston's Inns and Taverns refused to be drawn on the future of the pub, but would not deny reports that it is facing demolition.
Staff at the pub also refused to comment on the record.
A spokesman for the Wolverhampton brewery said: "We currently have an estate of over 550 pubs, nationwide.
"We're constantly reviewing and updating our estate, considering purchase proposals and sales on a regular basis."
Nearby Turners garage in School Road, which has been serving customers since the 1950s, is set to be demolished to make way for a housing complex.
