Tears were shed by the 500 people who packed St Andrew's Church in Netherton to say farewell to John Plant, better known as Ayli from the duo Aynuk and Ayli.

The funeral procession made its way to the church with Mr Plant's widow Linda and the funnyman's sidekick of 22 years Alan Smith.

A simple floral tribute which spelt out 'John' was in the hearse and Mr Smith laid the comic's trademark cloth cap and scarf on the coffin before carrying it into the church.

The vicar Canon Hilary Hanke opened the service saying: "John Plant was someone who was very special to the Black Country, to its traditions and to its people and someone who was very special to his family and friends."

Mr Smith read out The Lord Is My Shepherd, the West Bromwich Albion anthem, in memory of the Baggies fan.

Legendary comedy king Ken Dodd sent a message of condolence which was read out during the service. The veteran entertainer was an admirer of Aynuk and Ayli and always wanted to meet the duo.

The hymns Morning Has Broken and All Things Bright And Beautiful were sung and 70s classic Kung Fu Fighting was played at the end of the service.

Mr Plant, aged 54, died at Russells Hall Hospital last week after suffering from serious bowel problems. Among those paying their respects was fellow Black Country comic Tommy Mundon, who regularly performed with Aynuk and Ayli.
