A man has appeared in court accused of trying to murder Wolverhampton community policeman Geoff King.Marcus Bailey, aged 25, is alleged to have fired at the Graiseley neighbourhood officer, hitting him twice, during a routine car crime crackdown.

Bailey, of Warnford Walk, Merry Hill, was dressed in tracksuit bottoms and a tracksuit top when he appeared on Wednesday before the city's magistrates' court on charges of attempted murder, possession of a silver Magnum revolver with intent to endanger life and resist arrest and possession of a lock knife.

Today it was revealed that a gun, knife and bullet have been recovered during a search of the area.

Flanked by two security staff in the glass dock of court number eight, he spoke only to confirm his personal details before glancing around the room. The court heard how Pc King and colleague Pc Karl Ansell had driven to Bromford Rise, Penn Fields, when they spotted a man acting suspiciously at around 10.30pm on Saturday.

Shots were fired, the first of which missed the officer, who then tried to turn. The second struck his left shoulder, leaving through his front torso while the third hit his right arm. Mr Howard Searle, prosecuting, said a jacket containing a lock knife had been recovered by a Pc on Sunday. A bullet had been recovered from the central reservation of the Penn Road, it was said.

On Monday, a silver handgun was found in a drain in the area. Bailey, who has a baby daughter, was arrested on Sunday.

Mr Sundip Murria, defending, said: "He will be pleading not guilty to each of the four charges."

District Judge Martin Brown turned down a bail application and sent the case to Wolverhampton Crown Court for a plea and directions hearing on February 7. Bailey yawned before being led down, making a kiss gesture to a woman in the public gallery.

Saturday's drama caused chaos to businesses and residents. Police cordoned off a large area around Penn Road and revellers at a 21st birthday party at The Quality Hotel were prevented from leaving the premises.
