Excuses for bad driving

You should keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and be able to stop safely within the distance you see to be clear. Watch the vehicle in front pass a lamp-post, count two seconds, and if you have already passed the same post, you need to drop back. (Highway Code 105, 234 etc.)

If the vehicle behind is too close, drop back further from the vehicle in front. This will allow you to brake more gently in an emergency, giving the tailgater more chance to stop.

Driving methods are up for discussion, but you should not make up your own rules! Driving at 80 or 90mph is illegal and not an option at all, Mr Guest (October 16), and it is highly irresponsible to make such suggestions to a newspaper.

"Road hogs", "dawdling" and "shouldn't be on a motorway" are value judgements used as excuses for poor conduct. If others are driving badly, more care is needed.

How does one allow oneself to be tailgated?
