Traffic ban will move nuisance
The ban on traffic in The High Street and Market Street, Stourbridge, between 11pm and 4am is not a solution to the overall problem of congestion in the town centre in the evenings.
It will simply shift the problem from the end of town where the bars are situated into the only residential area within the ring road, namely Lower High Street and Coventry Street.
Both ends of the town have undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years. In the High Street, several large bars have opened, attracting thousands of customers in the evenings. In Lower High Street the area has been transformed from being a rather neglected part of town into a smart residential area with new apartments and townhouses.
At present Lower High Street is still a relatively quiet part of the town centre in the evenings. There is obviously the occasional disturbance; living in a town centre, that is unfortunately to be expected.
However, the ban on traffic in the High Street will completely transform Lower High Street once again.
How would those councillors who voted for this ban feel if the road within which they live suddenly had 400 to 500 private taxis passing their doorsteps during the evening into the early hours? Also, to have several thousand revellers being deliberately pointed in the direction of their front door to await a taxi?
The suggestion that because of the presence of a few "taxi marshalls", people leaving the bars will wait, quietly and patiently around the Town Clock area for pre-booked private taxis is, quite frankly, ludicrous. If they can't do it in High Street, what sudden transformation is going to come over them as they make their way down the High Street towards Lower High Street?
The regular congestion, noise, litter and anti-social behaviour currently associated with the bar area of The High Street is now to be inflicted upon residents trying to get a peaceful night's sleep.
