Lunchtime ban is dictatorship

Re your report on The Dormston School's policy of unlawfully preventing their pupils entering various food outlets in Sedgley, all in the name of healthy eating. I am all in favour of children eating a wide variety food in order to maintain a healthy, balanced diet.

In this respect there is no healthy or unhealthy food. But to physically restrict pupils entering these premises, is a policy of dictatorship.Surely, these pupils are mature enough to decide for themselves what they need to eat, after all, they are taught about different foods in school.

School meals, as with all mass catering, need to be prepared in advance and kept hot (if required) and will lose nutritional value, just like the local takeaway. But Subway, featured in your report, freshly prepare their sandwiches on request, so I cannot see the need to boycott this takeaway.

I have read a mountain of research and articles on foods that are "good" for you and it seems there is a lot of contradiction. Indeed fresh fruit and vegetables have been found to be high in pesticide residues, that cannot be healthy.

The human body is a complex machine that requires different nutrients at different times and stages and therefore one type of food cannot be deemed better than another.

I fully agree with Jamie Oliver's sentiments on this issue, but he is able to cook on demand in his restaurants and use the finest and freshestÊingredients, schools cannot do that at the moment due to chronic underfunding.
