Wardens a waste of money

I am told Wolverhampton Council operates a programme of Neighbourhood Wardens. I telephoned the Civic Centre to ask what they actually do. The person I spoke to told me the wardens deal with antisocial behaviour, graffiti and abandoned vehicles and do a range of tasks in the areas where they work.

I asked where they work. The lady said they work in Low Hill, Bushbury, Whitmore Reans, Parkfields, Ettingshall and some areas of Bilston.

I was also told there is information in my Tenants' Handbook about the Neighbourhood Warden Scheme.

It says on page 57 the scheme aims to:

1) Improve the quality of life for local residents by improving the physical environment.

Ettingshall has rubbish tipped everywhere. Old suites and fridges are dumped all around the estate.

2) Reduce crime and the fear of crime.

How do they intend to do that when we never see the warden for this estate?

3) Reduce antisocial behaviour.

We have got kids up and down on little motor bikes, kids running around smashing windows, drugs in the area and prostitution.

I was told the wardens earn between £14,000 to £16,000 a year. There are about 15 wardens working for the council. They have transport to drive around in. Transport costs money.

I think this is absolutely preposterous and a waste of money! People living in council properties are paying for a load of rubbish.

My sister-in-law, lives in Whitmore Reans, told me she has never seen the Neighbourhood Warden for that area and she has lived there for 20 years. She said they do have PCSOs, who are a great asset to the area and are employed by the police.

I now think Wolverhampton City Council should abolish this wasteful scheme and spend the money on the properties so tenants can have somewhere better to live, which would improve the quality of life.

Put PCSOs in place of the wardens as they are doing a better job. Put the rents down instead.
