Dog sled challenge
As a loyal supporter of local charity the Foundation for Conductive Education, I appeal to your readers to consider braving snow and ice for the Arctic Dog Sled Challenge which takes place February 17 to 24, 2007.
I took part in the challenge last year and found myself in charge of my own team of huskies travelling 200km across the Arctic Circle. It was the experience of a lifetime.
You encounter major challenges of course, but your team mates and the breathtaking scenery pull you through, as does the charity's inspirational work.
I am now a regular visitor to the Foundation for Conductive Education's centre in Cannon Hill Park and never fail to be moved by the courage and fortitude shown by the children and adults with disabilities as they try to master the most basic of human movements.
Conductive Education (CE) teaches people with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease the skills they need to lead more independent lives. While my friends thought I was barking mad taking up the challenge, I know that what I did helped change lives.
To take part in the Arctic Dog Sled Challenge you must commit to raising a minimum of £3,000, but there's no need to worry, it is quite possible to achieve. Friends and family and local businesses can be wonderfully supportive and I managed to raise £5,000 in just six weeks.
If you think you are barking mad enough to take up this challenge call Jenna Watkins at the Foundation for Conductive Education on 0121 4491569. I promise you won't regret it!
