Welcome to Aldi store
Judging by the headlines on September 12 about angry Wollaston villagers condemning the proposal for an Aldi store on the site of Wollaston Garage, it looks as if I am going to be in the minority.
For a long while I have wished there was a second grocery store in Wollaston, nearer to where I live, which is three quarters of a mile from the shopping centre.
When I was young and fit this was not a problem. Now I am 80 it's a different story. I am not a car driver so for my shopping trips it's a case of Shanks' pony or using our local circular bus route.
When my husband and I moved here 51 years ago there were no fewer than three grocery outlets. Now we have only the Spar and if they do not have what I am looking for it would be ideal to have a second store to use. Surely no-one can argue against the convenience of that?
Anne White mentions traffic chaos. Has she never noticed the congestion caused by huge car transporters parked outside Wollaston Garage when they were trading? I presume Aldi will provide a car park for customers and delivery vans to avoid on-road parking.
Anne White also mentions Lidl, Tesco and Spar in Amblecote. I daresay there were protests about these at the time, but it's the mark of progress and sadly there is not a lot we can do about it.
So in what way will another grocery store strip our "historic" village of its "individuality" more than any of the other shops which have mushroomed here over the years?
At least we aren't going to be saddled with yet another eating house, of which Wollaston already has a surfeit.
As far as I am concerned, welcome Aldi, bring it on!
Mrs Kathleen Smith, Wollaston.
