Better off than ever
I used to enjoy reading the letters page. Not any more. It should be renamed "The Whingers Page". Night after night people whinge about Tony Blair.
The people of this country are materially better off than they have ever been and that is in no small way due to Tony Blair and his Government.
The problem is that whatever people have, it isn't enough, they want more.
Take a look around you - how many old bangers do you see nowadays? The answer is very few because people want and can afford better than that. Where once folks went to Spain, Greece or France for their holidays, now it's Australia, Dubai and other exotic places and those who went to Blackpool and Scarborough are going to Spain, Greece or France.
Most things cost less in real terms.
So are all these Whingers going to vote Tory at the next election? If so, let me remind them of 15 per cent interest rates (John Major), the three-day week and power cuts (Ted Heath), three million-plus unemployed (Thatcher). Need I go on?
To those who will accuse Blair of being a war-monger I wonder if they remember the Sun headline "GOTCHA!"
