Kidderminster's Amy Smith couldn't inspire Team GB to their first medal of London 2012 as the women's 4x100m squad finished fifth in the pool last night.

The hosts were three tenths of a second outside the British record as they posted 3.37.02s at the Aquatics Centre – with Australia taking gold.

Smith, who turned 25 last Tuesday, swum the first leg in 54.27s – the second fastest of the squad after Fran Halsall's 53.29s.

Smith, who also races in the 100m and 50m freestyles this week, said: "I would have liked to have gone a bit faster and gone sub 54 seconds but hopefully I can build through the week and I'll get better.

"On the whole we went faster than in the heat which is always good."
