Indian restaurants in the region
The Black Country and Staffordshire have a lot to offer in terms of curry houses. Here's just a few to try without having to trek too far to find that perfect mix of spice.
Lasan, Birmingham
There aren't many restaurants you have to book in advance, but due to the publicity the Lasan received after winning Gordon Ramsay's Best Local Restaurant on Channel 4's The F Word in 2010, business boomed and hasn't stopped since. Chef director Aktar Islam also stole the show on BBC Two's Great British Menu, creating one of the winning dishes in 2011. The Lasan has a very posh modern and trendy feel to it with a great atmosphere. They are particularly well known for their seafood in particular the Alleppey seabass which inspired the winning fish course on Great British Menu. You'll find it tough to make a decision on what to eat and what to save for your next visit.

The distinctive yellow exterior really catches the eye which is needed because it hides in Wolverhampton's city centre, not on show, but by the Civic square. However, it has a great reputation with politicians, footballers, rock stars and comedians who are drawn in from miles, but don't be deterred it is open to all. There are flashy, pricey foods and drinks available but, there are also reasonably priced dishes and deals on offer. The Bilash has been the jewel in Wolverhampton's crown for 30 years now and its experience and knowledge is evident when you look at the menu. They specialise in Bangladeshi and Indian cuisine and many dishes are award-winning and very tempting. Don't be afraid to try the Bilash and treat yourself to a luxury dining experience.

Diva, Wednesfield
Not the most inviting looking place, but quite convenient as it is on the Bentley Bridge retail park. It's alongside fast food drive-thru restaurants, a cinema, and bowling complex but don't be deceived by its surroundings as it isn't a chain like it neighbours. Diva has a great reputation locally, and is regularly busy on week nights with huge family groups choosing to meet there for meals. They have some things on their menu that you may not find in just any Balti house, including exotic-sounding dishes such as the Gosht Achari – a spicy lamb dish, the Murgh Hyderabadi – chicken with ginger, garlic and tomato and Kalahandhi Chicken – cooked with fennel seeds, coconut milk, crushed black pepper and green chillies. There is also a dedicated veggie range of curries and a whole section just for non-meat eaters. If you're not too sure on a dish why not ask the staff who will happily guide you to what you fancy.

Saffron, Oldbury
They have a list of accolades as long as Meryl Streep's, one of the most notable from the Good Food Guide 2010, which named Saffron 'Best Restaurant in the Midlands'. Although the interior is a bit like a bachelor pad (red and black velvet with twinkly lights) and they could do with a little more light, but the food is fresh as a daisy. There's loads of choice, so it might take a while to decide what you want. There's melt in the mouth slow-cooked beef as well as fresh fish curry and some unusual options such as rabbit tossed with onion, spices and curry leaves.

Just opposite the village green in Wombourne, Tiffu's can be hard to find, but look out for a handily placed sign, it's just off the beaten track of the High Street. Their lime green decor is a lovely modern take to liven up a sleepy little village like Wombourne. Tiffu's offers contemporary Bangladeshi cuisine and its menu is rich and varied, with numerous speciality, fusion and traditional dishes to choose from. Even when the place is busy the staff aims to make everyone feel welcome and attend to any need as soon as possible. Tiffu's is reasonably priced and bringing your own drinks keeps costs down a little. One recommended for curry fans young and old.

Shahi Grill , Walsall
You will find it on the busy Bridge Street, at the heart of the town's entertainment district; it's popular with revellers and is regularly packed at weekends. They have served authentic Bangladeshi and Indian cuisine since it was established in the late 70's and is still family run. All ingredients are fresh and although the food may take a little longer to come it's worth the wait. You can definitely get your money's worth if you take advantage of their offers. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays its 2 for 1 and students get a cheeky discount too. If you love a bargain it's one to drop in to.

Spice Village, Stourbridge
Ranked as the number one restaurant in Stourbridge on Tripadvisor, Spice Village had to be in the list. The staff aren't too much in your face, but helpful if needed. It is described as Lye's little secret as not many people know about it. It is a very modern and fresh restaurant, nestled in Lye in Stourbridge. They have some specials which you might be weary of, but they are worth a try. Ones that have been on offer before was rhubarb and lobster, which is a sweet and sour and fresh with a hint of spice. It's worth trying something new, and if you want it slightly different they will try and meet your needs. Look out for that attention to detail; they do some lovely things with presentation.
Panache, Staffordshire
Panache is kitted out with a cool, modern decor with classy mirrors, striking lighting fixtures, and seating in red, black, and cream which all ties in with the stripes to compliment the peacock feather motif on the napkins and exterior signage. As well as being an intimate setting for a romantic meal they also cater for family occasions and corporate hospitality with their private function room. This is one of four panache restaurants in the Midlands and the menu offers an array of choice from the familiar, to house fusion specialties. The menu pictures get your mouth watering before you even order.

Shireen's, Aldridge
Although small, Shireen's gives you a friendly atmosphere and great value. They offer packages throughout the week, and have a great three course menu which has something for everyone. If you decide you want to keep visiting the intimate setting, then they also have a loyalty card system. They don't have a massive menu like some Indian restaurants, but there is still enough choice, and all food is made to your exact tastes. Just don't forget to bring your own drink.

Although sold as a traditional curry house everything tells you different, from its beacon hot pink entrance, the quality of the food, the size of the menu, the warm atmosphere and even the complimentary mood lighting. Bollywood music videos play on loop on the TVs dotted around the place, however don't let the modern look draw you away from the food on offer. There's traditional baltis, massalas, dhansaks and tandooris, as well as something a little different like one of their unique creations of a curry with an Italian twist that's complimented with pasta. This charming and cosy Indian also gives you option of take-out, but why turn down service with a smile without breaking the bank.
