Wolverhampton art group publishes book for centenary
An historic art group has celebrated its 100th anniversary with a commemorative book of members' work.
The Wolverhampton Society of Artists were guests of the city's mayor Claire Darke at the civic centre for the launch of the book celebrating its centenary, and featuring the art work of more than 100 of its members.
Included in the publication, called The Book Wot We Wrote, are short biographies of the artists who also talk about how they create their art and what it means to them.
The book will become part of the history of the Society as it captures a snapshot of the broad spectrum of its members' creativity at a moment in time.
Chairwoman Carol Widenbar said: "The Society is fortunate to have many professional people in its membership who bring their particular skills to bear in all that we do, in particular four members whose particular expertise was invaluable in the book's creation."
In recognition of their work, Councillor Darke presented a book each to graphic designer Anthony Clemson, photographer Chris Manley, history of art teacher Linda Nevill and Neil Davies, who project managed the publication.
A copy of the book will be kept in the city archives at Wolverhampton Art Gallery for future generations to see. It will also be on show at the Society’s centenary exhibition in December at the gallery.
A further centenary publication, called A History of the Wolverhampton Society of Artists 1919 – 2019, will be launched at the exhibition. It is being written by the Society's president Keith Oram and art curator Brendan Flynn.
The Society, which has permission to use the city’s coat of arms, was invited to launch this week's book at the Mayor's Parlour.
