US remake of Raised by Wolves to be set in the Deep South

It might sound unlikely, but it appears an upcoming American version of Caitlin Moran's Wolverhampton-based sitcom Raised by Wolves could be set in the Deep South.

That is according to Midlands actress Helen Monks, who starred as the lead character in the show.

It is being adapted from American TV by Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody, who penned Juno.

Speaking on Channel 4, Helen said: "I really don't know much, but I believe they're looking at setting it in the Deep South.

"It's all about a large family that's being home schooled so it would suit it to be in America's Deep South."

Raised by Wolves was based on Caitlin and her sister Caroline's upbringing as home-schooled siblings living in Enville Road, Warstones.

It first aired in 2013 and followed a version of the Moran sisters’ upbringing in Wolverhampton, but set in the modern day.

Helen and Alexa Davies starred as the two big sisters of the Garry family, helmed by an unconventional single mother, played by Rebekah Staton, who went to Wolgarston High School in Penkridge.

It was axed before its third season last year, which saw Caitlin and Caroline Moran launch a crowdfunder to try to secure enough cash to save the series – but they were unable to do so.

The ‘Kickstarter’ page was launched to try to raise £320,000 to pay for a third series of the Caitlin Moran-penned sitcom which ran for two seasons on Channel 4.

The 30-day campaign raised £200,207 from 3,869 backers – falling £119,793 short of its target.

After scrapping the show, Channel 4 released a statement which read: “We are incredibly proud of launching Raised By Wolves and introducing the exploits of Della, Germaine, Aretha and their family to audiences, however Channel 4 is committed to a range of brand new series.

“We wish Caitlin, Caz and our friends at Big Talk all the best.”
