More than 200 aspiring young musical starlets flocked to Wolverhampton's Grand Theatre for the chance to star in a classic musical.

The first round of auditions for The Sound of Music saw youngsters sing Do-Re-Mi and dance on stage as they vied for one of 12 positions as the Von Trapp children. The show will be performed by South Staffs Musical Theatre Company in October.

Among the lucky ones who got through to the next round of auditions, which will be held tomorrow, were sibling trio Tilly, Oliver and Poppy Thompson.

The youngsters, members of West Bromwich Operatic Society youth section, said they were "very excited" to have made it through.

"We were nervous before we went on, but you just get on with it," said Oliver, aged 12, of Danescourt Road, Tettenhall.

Among the judging panel was former St Dominic's High School pupil Sophie Bould, who played Liesl in the West End production of the show as well as stepping in as Maria.

Miss Bould, a former member of South Staffs Musical Theatre Company, said: "I could not get over how many people turned up. The kids are just amazing. Some of them could absolutely perform in the West End."
