It's been called 'glorious fun' and 'simply divine'. Whoopi Goldberg's Sister Act arrives in Wolverhampton on Tuesday, February 7, 2012, for a run that will continue until Saturday, February 18.
The musical played to more than a million people at the London Palladium during its West End run and will star Coronation Street's Denise Black as Mother Superior and Brookside and The Royal favourite Michael Starke as Monsignor O'Hara.
Sister Act follows the tale of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier, played by Cynthia Erivbo, who witnesses a murder.
She is placed into protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won't be found – a convent.
Deloris is disguised as a nun and quickly finds fans amongst her fellow 'sisters' but makes the wrong impression on the convent's strict Mother Superior.
The musical is based on the movie of the same name and is billed as a fabulous, family-friendly, feel-good show packed with songs inspired by Motown, funk, soul and disco.
Goldberg has been thrilled by the success of the musical version of Sister Act, since its opening at the London Palladium in 2009.
She is a particular fan of the score, which was built on a Motown foundation – without stealing the label's greatest tunes.
"The music is not the Motown music that you know," said Goldberg. "We were not allowed to have it."
Fans at the Grand can look forward to gospel songs set on the disco dancefloor.
"You recognise all the disco licks, so you're OK with it," she added.
