The Gatehouse Theatre lit up in red

Stafford Gatehouse Theatre lit up in red on Monday and a spokesman for the theatre said support had been "incredible".

Councillor Carolyn Trowbridge, cabinet member for leisure at borough council, she said: “Obviously the announcement of £1.5 billion for arts and culture is great news although we will need to find out how the funding is to be allocated.

"The Gatehouse is a jewel in the crown of Stafford’s cultural offer and I know there are so many people who will be looking forward to once again attending the extensive range of productions our theatre delivers.

"It is a terribly difficult time for Freedom Leisure, the not for profit charitable trust who run the Theatre on our behalf, and all their staff, and I hope that this injection of funding into the sector will help them to get back up and running when they are able to.”

A Gatehouse spokesman said: “The support received over the last couple of months from our customers has been incredible.

“We have received £4,000 in donations and have had so many messages of good wishes and support to all of the Gatehouse team.

“We are delighted the Government has pledged their support for our industry. The key now is in the detail and what that means for our much loved regional theatre, specifically the very critical timescale around reopening for live events.”
