Church comes alive as Sound of Music cast drops in - with video
The hills of Wolverhampton are alive with the Sound of Music – that’s after the famous musical opened to a sold-out Grand Theatre last night.
But ahead of the opening night, cast members gathered at St Peter’s Church in the city centre for a quick burst of song. Zoe Ann Bown, who plays Sister Margaretta, Emilie Flemming, Maria, and Megan Llewellyn, Mother Abbess, delighted passers-by with a rendition of My Favourite Things.
Theatre spokesman Alex Woolliscroft said: “Thank you to Reverend David Wright of St Peter’s Church for providing the cast of The Sound Of Music with the perfect welcome to Wolverhampton. Not only did the cast discover one of Wolverhampton’s oldest institutions, they also discovered its excellent acoustics.”
Based on Baroness Maria Von Trapp’s 1949 autobiography, this new staging of The Sound of Music tells the true story of the world-famous singing family, from their search for happiness at the beginning, to their escape to freedom as Austria becomes part of the Third Reich at the start of WWII.
It features some of the most memorable songs ever performed on stage, including Edelweiss, My Favourite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, and of course, the title song, The Sound of Music.
