It fell to the self-proclaimed ‘German Comedy Ambassador to Great Britain’ Henning Wehn to re-open the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton last night.

Upgraded from next door’s Wulfrun Hall, fans were greeted with cards upon arrival to vote on whether Henning was to be classed as an immigrant or not, which formed the basis of his latest show ‘Westphalia Is Not an Option’.

He took the first half to perform some of his ‘greatest hits’ as well as recounting the time he saw An Evening with Mike Tyson in the hall following a support slot with Stewart Lee

He also commented on the currently unfinished state of the hall to say it had a slight ‘council’ feel about it.

Wehn then returned for a longer second half to perform his new show.

Focussing on the common themes that Henning is known for covering, he looked at the differences between German and UK life as well what it means to be an immigrant in a Brexit Britain.

There were also glimpses into Wehn’s personal life such as his beginnings on the comedy circuit and the reasoning behind his move to this country.

He challenged the audience with an 'odd one out' quiz involving various England footballers to draw on the UK’s relationship with race, whilst also commenting on his fascination with darts matches and the connotations of the St George’s flag.

As the evening drew to a close it’s clear that Wehn has a unique selling point (being German) that has allowed him to rise to the upper echelons of the comedy circuit, however he’s growing into a comedian for the strength of his material and story rather than just for jokes about losing the World Cup.
