Stafford events called off due to coronavirus pandemic
Events in Stafford organised by the council have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
A community planting day at Charnley Road park was taking place on May 2 as part of an official opening ceremony following the refurbishment of the park.
The £400,000 makeover included a new playground for toddlers and young children, skatepark, and outdoor gym have been available to the public since December – but the wet weather has delayed developers putting the finishing touches to the landscape.
Stafford Borough Council expects to rearrange the community event later in the year.
And Stafford in the World – which brought a host or organisations and voluntary groups into the heart of Stafford to celebrate the county town’s presence on the global stage – has also been cancelled.
The event, earmarked for late May, would have celebrated its fifth year with music, dancing and street entertainment taking place in and around the Market Square for the day-long event.
Council leader, Patrick Farrington, said: “I know people will be disappointed, especially those who had already put a lot of work in to enable these events to take place, but the health and safety of our community is paramount and following the government’s advice on social distancing it would be wrong to hold events that would attract hundreds of people.”
