The Bodyguard picks up TV Bafta Award

The hit drama series, created by Cannock's Jed Mercurio, was awarded the Virgin Media's Must-See Moment as voted by the public.

Other shows picking up wards on the night included Killing Eve, Eastenders, Britain's Got Talent, Inside Number Nine and more.

The Bodyguard also claimed two awards at the National Television Awards earlier this year - for Best New Drama, and Best Drama Performance for Richard Madden.

Madden said he would love to see a second series of the show as he revealed that Mercurio was 'in talks' for a follow-up.

The political thriller became the UK’s most watched drama since records began when its finale hit screens in October last year.

Fans and critics were hooked on the six-episode series, which saw Madden’s protection officer trying to prevent Keeley Hawes’ divisive home secretary from coming to harm.

Since Bodyguard ended, viewers have called for creator Jed Mercurio – who is also behind another mega hit in Line Of Duty – to write a second season.

Line Of Duty’s hotly-anticipated finale last week scooped more than nine million viewers, making it the biggest show of the year so far.

BBC director of content Charlotte Moore said: “Over the past six weeks, Line Of Duty has kept the whole nation on the edge of their seats, so it was fantastic to see such a big audience for Sunday’s finale.
