Thousands turn out for Great Wyrley carnival - in pictures
Thousands flocked to a popular summer carnival over the weekend as organisers hailed the success of the event.
Around 5,000 people enjoyed the glorious sunshine at Great Wyrley Carnival over the weekend.
Saturday's event included a host of fun activities and Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson even made an appearance.
There was a carnival procession, which started noon at The Star field off Hazel Lane.
Entertainment throughout the day included a dog show, fun fair and marching bands with a packed arena line-up, which began from 1pm.
Pauline Kelsey, secretary of the Great Wyrley Carnival Committee, which organises the event each year, said the weather was the best it had ever seen.
"We had an excellent afternoon," she said. "Of course the weather was beautiful and it helped bring about 5,000 people along to the carnival.
"It was very successful and we're delighted with how the event went."
The floats in the procession were judged by chair of Great Wyrley Parish Council, Helen Snape, and vice-chairman Tony Newell.
The winners of the competition, which was themed on countries taking part in the 2018 World Cup, were St Thomas More Catholic Primary School, whose theme was Brazil.
Second place was Great Wyrley Scout Group, with Saudi Arabia and third place was Great Wyrley Guides whose country was Mexico.
The best dressed stall was handed to the Great Wyrley Townswomen's Guild and there was also a fancy dress competition for both the adults and children.
Mrs Kelsey added: "We had five floats and while unfortunately we had a hiccup with the bands playing, the school steel band performed and four children sat on the back of the beavers lorry to go round for some music. T hey saved the day.
"It was excellent the weather and probably the best we've had for a few years. We had a very good turnout and a lot of people on the procession route. I'd like to thank the police for their support."
Gavin Williamson, who is also the MP for South Staffordshire, was due to open the carnival but was tied up with an Armed Forces Day event in Llandudno.
After arriving in a helicopter, he managed to turn to enjoy the carnival in the afternoon.
Preperations will soon be under way for 2019's Great Wyrley Carnival – and Mrs Kelsey is appealing for members of the public to come forward and help.
She added: "It takes us a year to organise, we'll be starting next years event soon. We have a meeting to discuss everything and then go from there.
"We have only a small committee so are always looking for volunteers to join up."
