The celebrations were marked with 50 events and different organisations in the area showed their pride for the county by posting on social media including Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Head of Marketing and Communications Heather Challinor said: “It’s great that we have a day that celebrates everything that is fantastic about our county. Our Service is extremely proud to serve the communities of Staffordshire 24/7.”

Some of the events being held included arts and crafts activities to recognise some of the county's most famous historical figures like Josiah Wedgwood and Samuel Johnson, author of the first comprehensive English dictionary.

This year's highlight was the celebration of the Staffordshire oatcake with local organisations joining in to raise money for charity and sharing photos of their favourite oatcake fillings.

Dozens of people shared their photo with a Staffordshire made mug on social media to celebrate the county's world-famous pottery industry.

Mark Winnington, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth at Staffordshire County Council and Deputy Chair of Enjoy Staffordshire said: “This is our third Staffordshire Day and once again it’s wonderful to see so many people and groups getting involved in the celebrations.

"Staffordshire day has also been trending on Twitter for most of the day which is brilliant and is helping us show the world what a great place Staffordshire really is.

"Our Staffordshire oatcake mornings have gone down incredibly well and our mug shot campaign is helping promote our great pottery industry.

"And, a big thanks to our local actors too, who have been retelling the stories of some of our most historic heroes in a series of online videos.

“The fun doesn’t end today though, there’s still plenty happening over the week and weekend, so make sure you get the chance to join in the celebrations.”

The date for Staffordshire Day is 1 May and was chosen by the public in 2015 and marks the creation of the world-famous Wedgwood pottery company back in 1759.

Celebrations are set to continue throughout the week and over the Bank Holiday weekend with more events including music and food festivals, vintage markets, guided tours of museums, special offers from major attractions as well as community events.
