Terriers takeover at Staffordshire County Showground show - with pictures and video

Terriers of all shapes and sizes descended on Stafford for the 101st anniversary of a prestigious show.

Hundreds of dog owners took their beloved pets to compete to be top dog at the National Terrier Show at Staffordshire County Showground in Weston Road, Stafford, on Saturday.

It is the only dog competition in the calendar dedicated to terriers, and pampered pets competed for a variety of awards, judged by a panel, including Top Terrier of the Year and Top Puppy of the Year. The winners were awarded with vouchers sponsored by Lintbells.

National Terrier Show secretary Stuart Plane, aged 64, from County Durham, said: “It was very successful. Around 1,400 dogs were entered to compete on the day which is a bigger numbers than last year. We are very pleased because terriers are not the most popular group.

A Kerry blue terrier took home the prize for Best in Show while a Best Puppy in Show went to a Jack Russell terrier.

Only two types of terriers were recognised in the eighteenth century, which were long and short legged. But today there are many types and each one seemed to be present at the show.

This year follows on from the club celebrating its 100th year last year when Dr Desiree Scott, an archivist with the Kennel Club, produced scrolls and donated scrolls to the club which featured the names and breed of the Best in Show winner at all the previous shows.
