Taylor Swift album spends 10th week at number one as singer celebrates birthday
It comes after Swift became the most decorated artist in the history of the Billboard Music Awards on Thursday.
Taylor Swift album The Tortured Poets Department has reached number one on the UK chart for a 10th non-consecutive week on the day of the singer’s 35th birthday.
The 14-time Grammy winner has become the first international solo artist in almost 25 years to achieve this feat after Shania Twain’s Come On Over spent 11 weeks at the top between 1999 and early 2000, according to the Official Charts Company.
It comes after Swift became the most decorated artist in the history of the Billboard Music Awards on Thursday, which she said was the “nicest early birthday present”.
The US pop superstar from Pennsylvania scooped 10 awards, including the top artist gong and top Billboard 200 album for her 11th studio album.
Earlier in the month she performed the last date on her juggernaut Eras Tour which saw her travel across the globe to perform in cities including Paris, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro and London, where she played eight dates at Wembley Stadium across June and August.
The music artist, who was named Time Magazine’s person of the year in 2023, has also become Spotify’s most-played artist for a second year running, with more than 26.6 billion streams.
Following its release in April, The Tortured Poets Department broke a string of records, and Swift became the first music artist to claim 12 number one albums in the UK chart in the 21st century.
It took her less than 12 years to secure her 12 chart-toppers which, in comparison, had taken The Beatles 14 years to achieve with Please Please Me (1963) and The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl (1977).
Elsewhere in the UK albums chart this week, Short N’ Sweet by US popstar Sabrina Carpenter spends another week at number two while Christmas by Canadian singer Michael Buble rises to number three.
Making its debut at number four is Rosie by Blackpink’s Rose, while Carpenter’s debut holiday EP Fruitcake enters at number five, following the release of her Netflix special A Nonsense Christmas.
In at number one on the UK singles chart, 40 years following its release, is Last Christmas by Wham! with That’s So True by US star Gracie Abrams in at number two.
The rest of the top five is comprised of festive hit All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey, Apt by Rose and Bruno Mars, and Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee.
