DJ pays tribute to Prodigy’s Keith Flint with tattoo
The 49-year-old was found dead at his home in the Essex hamlet of North End on March 4.
A DJ who experienced a life-changing Prodigy gig on his 14th birthday has remembered its late frontman Keith Flint with a tribute tattoo.
Gareth Winters, from Cardiff, said the 1996 concert, which had the Foo Fighters as a support band, “totally blew my mind and changed the whole way I looked at music”.
The drum and bass DJ, known as Kooley, and brother of TV presenter Alex Winters, covered his calf with a black-and-white portrait of Flint two days after his death.
The 36-year-old, who saw The Prodigy 12 times over the years, said: “I hate it when people get all emotional over celebrity deaths. But I finally understood a little.
“My brother just sent me a screenshot of a news article announcing it. My heart absolutely sank.
“It just felt like the end of an era. My biggest musical influence over. They were pivotal in my music direction as a DJ and producer.
“It’s my tribute and way of never forgetting how key they are and were for me – and music as a whole.”
Flint, 49, died as the result of hanging, an inquest heard on Monday.
He was found dead at his home in the Essex hamlet of North End on March 4.
The singer rose to fame in the Brit Award-winning electronic band in the 1990s and was known for hits including Firestarter and Breathe.
They released their latest album No Tourists in November, their seventh consecutive number one record.
