The actor who played the son of late Coronation Street star Liz Dawn has said “life was imitating art” when he went to see her in hospital shortly before she died.

Nigel Pivaro played Jack and Vera Duckworth’s wayward son Terry on-and-off since 1983, and the soap villain actor said he had a feeling of deja vu when he visited his former co-star a couple of weeks before her death.

Pivaro, who described Dawn as “a great lady, a special person”, said the visit reminded him of a scene they filmed for an episode in 2000 in which Vera had been forced to donate a kidney to her grandson because Terry had let them down.

Writing in the Sunday Mirror, Pivaro wrote: “And so, as I sat down on September 13, life was imitating art. This time though, my hospital visit was for real.”

He said the pair reminisced about the old days with the late Bill Tarmey, who played Jack, and recalled “some of the funnier moments we shared together”.

Pivaro wrote: “I am so glad to have had that precious time with Liz in the hospital and to hear that distinctive infectious laugh she had for the last time.”

Dawn first appeared in Coronation Street in 1974 before her character moved into number nine along with husband Jack.

After being diagnosed with lung disease emphysema, Dawn was written out of the soap at her request in 2008, with Vera dying in her sleep.
