Music students put on magical concert in Wolverhampton
Two youth music groups from Wolverhampton have held a magical Christmas concert.
Students from Wolverhampton Music Service, based in Pool Street just outside of the city centre, had been rehearsing for weeks in the run up to the day.
It was the last concert that the students will perform of 2019.
Sarah Fletcher, assistant headteacher, said: "Teachers at the Music Service are so proud of the achievements of these pupils who rehearse weekly and strive for the highest standards of performance.
"They are a credit to the Music Service as ambassadors for the city of Wolverhampton and show what hard work and commitment can result in. Our pupils go on to pursue diverse careers paths and are proof of the benefits that a quality music education brings."
70 Young people from across the city came together to showcase their talents at St John in the Square Church.
Members of the school's Youth Orchestra and Youth Wind Orchestra performed a glittering concert with a festive twist for proud parents and supporters.
The programme included light-hearted and serious pieces from each orchestra, including music by Shostakovich to the film ‘The Gadfly’, Elgar’s ‘Chanson de Nuit’, ‘Sea Songs’ by Vaughan Williams and music from the film ‘Polar Express’.
The two orchestras had been working on a new repertoire for their final concert of the year since their summer tour to Spain - where they performed in front of an audience totalling more than 1,500 people.
Audiences joined in to sing some favourite carols and indulge in a mince pie and a glass of sherry.
The festive concert was supported by the Friends of the Music Service.
The charitable body of parents, supporters and volunteers fundraise annually to support the 15 ensembles that the Music Service runs on a weekly basis, at no cost to parents.
This year, they decided not to sell tickets, but instead, encouraged event goers to take part in the raffle or consider making a donation after the concert.
