Review: Energy, Sunflower Lounge, Birmingham
Following a support tour with Southampton punk band Creeper earlier in the year, Monday night saw US punk’s Energy bring their debut UK headline tour to Birmingham’s Sunflower Lounge.
Formed in February 2006 in Stoughton, Massachusetts the band are currently touring in support of their latest release ‘Under the Mask’. Taking in the majority of the country, the tour comes completely off of the band’s success on the aforementioned Creeper tour which saw them supporting along with Milk Teeth and Puppy.
Opening the show were Coventry based indie rockers Mantra before Southampton’s Miss Vincent took to the stage. Engaging and full of high energy pop rock tracks, the band performed songs from their latest EP ‘Somewhere Else’. Their half hour set flew by in an instant, with the full room clearly familiar with the majority of the bands material on show, attracting many of their own fans.
It was then time for Energy to take to the stage, opening with the double hitter of ‘The Witching Hour’ and ‘Another Yesterday’. Unfortunately the number of people in the room had diminished greatly before the band took to the stage; however this did nothing to stop the band’s horror rock songs sounding huge within the intimate Sunflower Lounge. Lead vocalist Tank bounded and jumped around the stage like a man possessed, with the rest of group clearly enjoying themselves on tracks such as ‘New Worlds Of Fear’ and ‘Dead In Dreamland’.
For a band’s debut headline shows within the country, these can certainly be considered a success and should hopefully see the band develop a cult following similar to that in their own country. It’s hoped that upon Energy’s return to our shores they can make the move into bigger venues and take advantage of some of the theatrics that they’re clearly destined to embrace.
