The day of celebrations on Saturday started off with a fundraising walk, which saw 200 people taking part to try to raise cash for the zoo's orangutan enclosure appeal.

Then at 2pm there was a party in Dudley Castle's courtyard, with retro singers The Glamophones entertaining visitors.

There was also a display of zoo memorabilia on show throughout the day.

Zoo director Derek Grove said he hopes the venue can continue to inspire people for at least another eight decades.

He said: “When Dudley Zoo first opened on May 6,1937 it was declared the most modern zoo in Europe and people got to see animals they’d only ever read about in books.

“For 80 years we’ve welcomed millions of visitors on site who have enjoyed seeing and learning more about our incredible species and there are many familiar faces who have grown up with us and made special memories with their family and friends here.

“Dudley Zoo is proud to be part of the region’s rich history and we’re proud to know it’s part of yours.

“Over the last eight decades there have been lots of changes and improvements to the zoo as we continue to expand and improve the facilities for the animals and visitors.

“Our anniversary appeal is to raise money for a new outdoor area for our critically endangered Bornean orangutans, with all money raised from the charity walk going towards this important project.

“We’d like to thank everyone who has supported our mission to create a better future for wildlife and hope we can continue inspiring future generations for the next 80 years.

“Extinction is not an option and together we can make a real difference.”
