70 ales to feature at annual Wolverhampton festival
There will be a choice of 70 real ales to try at the 42nd Wolverhampton Beer and Cider Festival - which will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the first flight.
The event, run by the city branch of the Campaign for Real Ale, opens in Newhampton Arts Centre, Dunkley Street, on Thursday, June 8, and runs to Saturday.
This year commemorates the 80th anniversary of the first flight of the Boulton Paul Defiant, the Wolverhampton-built Second World War fighter plane.
Its inaugural flight was in August 1937 at Pendeford airport and the Defiant went on to see service in the Battle of Britain.
Although often thought of as a failure, on one day in May 1940 the Defiant shot down 37 German aircraft for no loss - an achievement that was unequalled throughout the war. The plane later saw service as a night fighter during the Blitz.
A Defiant will feature on the festival glasses.
The festival opens at 5pm and goes on to 11pm on the Thursday and continues Friday and Saturday from noon until 11pm both days. Admission is £3.50 on Thursday, £2.50 between noon and 5pm on Friday but after 5pm admission £4.50. Saturday is free all day.
Camra members get £1 worth of beer tokens Thursday and Friday.
Entertainment on Friday evening only will be the local duo, Peaky Blonder.
The Well, Wolverhampton Food Bank, will be the charity supported by the annual festival.
Help is still required from Camra members including setting up from Monday to Wednesday and taking down on Sunday and Monday. Contact staffing officer Amanda Hignett on 07933 441850 or e-mail mandab59@yahoo.com
