The pub's soft lighting, homely fireplace and relaxed atmosphere were the perfect tonic after frantic Tuesday.

Settling in my chair, I cast my eye over the menu and looked for some good, old-fashioned comfort food.

The menu itself was well-balanced, with pork, chicken, fish and steak dishes, as well as burgers and a range of starters, sides, specials and desserts. Light lunches and meals for "younger guests" are also available.

I opted for the steak, baby onion and London pride ale pie with mash, gravy and green beans – just the ticket for my rumbling stomach.

Placing my order at the bar, a fake white flower, attached to my table number, was exchanged for payment which was a nice touch.

The food took about 20 minutes to arrive, with the pie delivered in its own pot and gravy sat neatly in a gravy boat.

The cutlery was already conveniently inside a glass on top of the wooden table, along with a box containing condiments.

The puff pastry on the pie initially made it look more like a monster, but it was pleasing to see the meal was quite manageable. The food came out hot and was very tasty.

The Ember pub is hard to miss, situated on the busy Birmingham Road in Walsall.

It seemed fairly busy when I arrived, considering it was a Tuesday evening.

The staff were also friendly which kept the atmosphere pleasant.

The meal came to £12, with a pint of San Miguel.

The pub also has offers on its two and three-course fixed menus.

Overall, it was a good pub dining experience in modern surroundings and a relaxed atmosphere.
