With regular charity fundraisers and cocktail evenings, the pub is a real focal point in the community.

The "country pub and eating house", as it describes itself on the website, is situated along the Wergs Road.

First impressions of The Crown are positive. There is a garden area at the front with a patio with half a dozen tables.

With a large car park to the back and side, there is plenty of space for hungry diners to leave their cars.

The pub is large inside, with the bar in the centre, and restaurant style tables and chairs surrounding it.

There are also comfortable leather chairs with tables, for customers perhaps just enjoying a drink.

The walls are a light olive green, and there are various paintings and photographs up on them.

We were told by the barman to sit where we liked, so chose a table by one of the windows on the soft, cushioned chairs.

Most of the tables were taken, with families, older couples and friends.

Menus were brought out straight away by the waitress, with an additional list of Sunday lunch options.

After a glance, it was clear there was very little on the menu for vegetarians. The only options were two meat free pizzas or a cannelloni with spinach, butternut squash and a tomato sauce.

And for Sunday lunch, a vegetarian could have a plate of new potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, a ball of stuffing and vegetables.

Not quite something that would get the taste-buds tingling.

For my starter, I went for the baked button mushrooms in a creamy sauce with bread at £6.25. The dish came out on a wooden board, with a bowl of the button mushrooms and slices of stirata romana bread. The sauce, made of cream and garlic, was a delight and a perfect accompaniment to the meaty mushrooms.

My dining partner went for the homemade pork rillette, with a pear, balsamic and date chutney.

After asking the waitress if rillette was a pate, it was a surprise when the starter came out as a small bowl consisting of shredded pork bound together with a butter paste. Not quite a pate unfortunately.

Two pieces of brown toast also came out, and the pork went very well with the sweet chutney.

After a quick deliberation over my main, I went for the Rustica pizza with roasted Mediterranean vegetables, goats cheese and rocket leaves (£8.95).

The pizza had a thin, crispy base and plenty of vegetables, and tasted good. Although it felt a bit odd eating a pizza as everyone else was tucking into a full English roast.

My dining partner plumped for the roast pork (£9.95). The slices of meat were tender and accompanied with a large Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, stuffing and gravy, although not quite enough of the latter.

There was also a small plate of vegetables including carrots, green beans and cauliflower, cooked to perfection.

The chef had forgotten to put a piece of crackling on the plate, so the waitress returned to the kitchen and promptly brought some to us.

The meal was finished and seemed to have gone down well.

For pudding, I picked the chocolate brownie with vanilla ice-cream (£5.75). The sponge was soft and sweet and a real treat.

My partner went for the apple and blackcurrant crumble with vanilla custard (£5.25). Unfortunately the custard was more like milk, as it was far too runny and cast aside.

The crumble was sweet and bursting with fruit. After ordering a Virgin Mojito and a glass of lemonade, the total bill was £46.90.

I would give The Crown a second chance as it was a classy place but only if more vegetarian options are added to the menu.
