Following 10 sell-out shows in London last year, the cast of Mrs Kapoor’s Daughter’s Wedding went on the road, performing to yet another sell-out crowd at Birmingham’s The Alexandra on Monday’s finale night.

Almost 1,400 theatre-goers watched on in amusement as Gujarati mother Mrs Kapoor and Punjabi husband Mr Kapoor finally get to prepare for their eldest daughter’s nuptials - something I’m sure a lot of the audience were able to relate to.

YouTube star Parle Patel, who played Mrs Kapoor, was undoubtedly the star of the show, effortlessly bringing to life the matriarch. His witty one-liners and original ad-libs made for some outrageously ridiculous but hilarious comments, often muttered within Asian families.

Simple but effective choreography from a troupe of Bollywood dancers donning stunning costumes provided a nice interlude to the theatrical performances, although towards the second half the routines seemed slightly repetitive and unexciting. A fashion show segment showcased intricately-designed Asian wedding wear on the catwalk but I wasn’t sure if the crowd was being urged to spend a small fortune on the clothing or just admire the outfits.

Singers Shahid Abbas Khan and Drupti Vaja also flaunted their impressive vocals during the show with a mash-up of tunes, while a quartet of Dhol players definitely gave the crowd itchy feet with their infectious party vibes.

Although watching this production will set you back a good three hours, it’s clear to see why it’s become such a hit with fans across the country - guaranteed laughter leaving you feeling ecstatic.

It’s brilliant to see, for a change, a talented all-Asian cast shining on stage and thrilling their crowd with a plot so relatable to many families. If nothing else, following the highs and lows of a typical Indian get-together will leave you wishing you could get that important invite to Mrs Kapoor’s Daughter’s Wedding all over again.
