Blame It On Bianca Del Rio, Symphony Hall, Birmingham - review

There's nothing like a heavy dose of insult comedy on a Monday evening to shock and entertain you.

And last night, RuPaul's Drag Race winner Bianca Del Rio took this notion to a whole new level in her brand new show, Blame It On Bianca Del Rio.

First up to warm the crowds inside Birmingham's Symphony Hall, however, was Florida queen Miss Sherry Vine.

Her set was made up of a series of parody songs, crafted from existing hit tracks with brand new and thoroughly crude lyrics.

Frequently receiving shocked gasps and cheers from the audience, Sherry belted out revamped renditions of Britney Spears' Toxic, and even Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah with a racy twist.

On top of being hilarious, Sherry's voice was utterly sublime and would not have been out of place in an arena.

After a brief audio message from drag legend RuPaul, Bianca graced the stage in a glittering black dress, towering wig, and her signature bold makeup.

"Now I issue this warning at every show," the 43-year-old queen stated.

"If you're fat I'm going to make you cry, and if you're gay I'm going to make you cry.

"Don't worry though, I'm an equal opportunist hater. I hate everyone".

And from this moment on, no one was safe from Bianca's sharp tongue or cutting jokes.

Bianca cracked outrageous remarks about Donald Trump, Theresa May, the LGBT community, and even her fellow Drag Race contestants during her hour-long performance that left my face aching from non-stop laughter.

The queen is known for her signature insult comedy, and she certainly did not disappoint as she tackled a variety of taboo topics such as deadly illnesses, cultural appropriation, and the political climate of America.

What could have silenced an entire room awkwardly, instead incited belly laughter and shocked gasps due to Bianca's razor-sharp and intelligent way of delivering comedy.

So engaged were the audience, that even a simple icy side glance or a long sip from her wine glass caused giggles across the room.

After leaving the stage to one standing ovation, Bianca returned to the stage to address the audience by answering a section of fan questions written on slips and handed in before the show.

What the audience didn't know however, was that Bianca would ask for the stage lights to be raised and for people to stand up when their question and name was announced.

From discussing who is the smelliest drag queen on Drag Race, to making a short video to address one audience member's sister's romantic troubles, Bianca had everyone in the room howling in laughter, as well as praying that she wouldn't turn the next joke on them.

The self-proclaimed 'clown in a gown' certainly lived up to her hateful yet hilarious reputation with another shocking and stunning show in Birmingham.
