Off Grid, directed by Carl Timms from Bewdley and produced by West Midlands-based company Dark Matter Films, will see the Scottish actor take on the post-apocalyptic narrative.

Talking about James' role, Carl said he 'couldn't be happier' to have the Game Of Thrones star on-board.

"From the moment I read script, I thought he’d be perfect for the role", he said.

"James is that rare kind of actor who can play both terrifying and gentle with equal aplomb, a combination of qualities that make his character Tanner a force of nature.”

The star has a career that has spanned five decades and is best known for starring in blockbusters such as The Chronicles of Narnia, Wonder Woman, Ben-Hur and Troy.

He has also appeared in popular TV shows like Sons of Anarchy, Silent Witness, The Durrells, Rebus and Shetland.

James will be joined in Off Grid by British horror actress Kate Davies-Speak, best known for her role in multi-award winning sci-fi show Horizon.

The movie will begin shooting in June this year on location in Worcestershire, with a portion of the film’s budget being raised by public crowdfunding.

Off Grid is the second short directed by Carl and his writing partner Mark Brendan. Their first production, zombie flick Still, was filmed in Birmingham city centre and appeared at 25 film festivals, winning nine awards.

WARNING - This clip contains scenes some viewers may find disturbing:

Off Grid is a post-apocalyptic horror story that follows John Tanner, a survivor who takes shelter in a derelict shack he finds in the woods.

There he fights to protect his frail, sick wife from 'the shining ones' - a group of possessed strangers recognised by their glowing blue eyes.

The film's fundraising campaign launched on Indiegogo this week, with donations starting at £10. The ‘perks’ on offer include the chance to be an extra in the film, land an executive producer role or take part in an exclusive combat workshop with Movieworks International, stunt providers to films such as Prince of Persia and King Arthur.
