RAF Museum Cosford rewarded for its success in telling stories
RAF Museum Cosford has picked up an award for its success in telling stories.
Visit England has highlighted its excellence in conveying the history of military aviation – from dogfights in the Battle of Britain to the dark cloud of the Cold War.
The museum has been awarded a Visit England Best Told Story accolade following a recent Visit England assessment.
The award is given to attractions that convey a compelling narrative to its visitors, whether through technical innovation or enthusiastic staff and volunteers.
Visit England's Visitor Attraction Accolades are designed to celebrate venues that go the extra mile to provide high-quality days out. They look at everything from visitor welcome and customer care, to exhibitions, cleanliness, and catering.
The museum received the award based on scores obtained following the annual Visit England Visitor Attraction Quality Scheme assessment.
The Visit England report said "The museum provides a most informative and enjoyable visit for a wide age range of visitors, and indeed a 'Best Told Story’. The range of content is most impressive from the history of the RAF and the Cosford site, through to several charged 'experiences', the dramatic Cold War Hangar and an amazing display from the Battle of Britain. Engines, missiles and memorabilia are all included in a comprehensive tribute to over 100 years of flying.
"There were friendly, proactive staff in every hangar who greeted visitors, offered information about the aircraft, and were very knowledgeable when answering questions, making the visit most interesting and enjoyable."
Alan Edwards, RAF Museum Midlands Head of Operations said he was delighted at the recognition.
He added: "Sharing the story of the RAF is at the heart of what the Museum is all about. The Best Told Story title from VisitEngland is acknowledgment that we’re sharing the RAF story in a memorable and creative way, to give visitors an entertaining day out.
"This award is a wonderful achievement for the team. Alongside our staff, our amazing volunteers play an essential part in the visitor experience, and it is brilliant to be able to share this recognition with them."
The museum, close to the A41 in Cosford, attracts just under half a million visitors each year and is open daily from 10am. Admission is free but there is a charge for parking.
