Volunteers have been sleeping out at Brockswood Animal Sanctuary in Sedgley after three sheep and two turkeys were taken from their enclosures overnight last week.

It is feared that they were taken for food.

The sanctuary posted an appeal online to help track the animals down.

Neil Swann, site manager, said: "It has already been shared thousands of times by our supporters online.

"As soon as we posted it people were asking us to open a fundraising page so they could help us improve our security systems."

Thanks to donations from supporters, the sanctuary has already raised £2,918 towards the £12,000 target so they can fully upgrade the security system at the 16-acre site.

Claire Thompson, from Brockswood, said: "Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support in this massive project.

"It has become obvious that this must go ahead starting from now and you are helping us to make it happen sooner rather than later.

"Currently we’re working together to patrol the site throughout the night and taking it in turns to stay out with the animals, but this isn’t something that we can do forever.

"Once our security is upgraded, we can enjoy a well-earned break and sleep easy knowing that they are all safe and secure, and that is worth every penny."

The incident has been reported to West Midlands Police which is investigating.
