Wolverhampton-based photographer Sarvjit Sra has created an exhibition called "GirlChild", based on his personal experiences as a father of two daughters.

Using photography and audio, the exhibition explores and highlights the issue of boy preference with an aim to educate and change perceptions.

Using research, including anonymous online surveys and engagement through a workshop programme, Sarvjit explored the sensitive and taboo subject that is universal across many cultures and poses the question: "Why do some see it more preferable to have a boy rather than a girl?"

He aims to tackle the “Oh never mind” scenario that actually occurs when celebration is replaced by disappointment through the production a series of images that aim to stimulate and create debate, helping the South Asian community voice their fears, opinions and experiences.

Sarvjit has established strong relationships within the South Asian community working as a social photographer for over a decade, with previous exhibitions include documenting and archiving portraits and stories of first generation South Asian migrants and the documentation of the rise of the Desi pubs (Indian eatery pubs) phenomenon in the West Midlands.

He said: "Sometimes we follow when we should lead. As a father of two daughters, I have never felt the desire or need to have a son, just an equal platform for our girls.

"By creating these images I hope to evoke positive change in our thinking."

The exhibition, which has been supported by Arts Council England and Creative Black Country, opens on Tuesday, September 10 at the Viner Gallery, Wolverhampton Grammar School, Merridale Lane, with a launch event, starting at 6pm.

It will then run until Saturday, September 28 by appointment only.
