It’s giant Norman: BFG entertains youngsters in Wolverhampton

A huge giant has taken over a shopping centre– but fear not, as he’s been put in place to delight children during half term.

Norman the friendly giant will be at Wolverhampton’s Mander Centre until tomorrow (2).

He has be described as the “biggest giant you will ever meet”.

Based in the centre, by the escalators, Norman towers over two storeys and has already been a huge hit with children and adults alike since he was unveiled on May 25.

Mander Centre staff have brought in the colossal giant statue to entertain visitors – people are invited to take a selfie with him anytime the centre is open.

Shoppers are encouraged to use the hashtag #NormanatMander and post their photographs on Instagram. There will be a winning prize for the best photograph.

The shopping centre tweeted: “Have you met our friendly Giant yet? Norman is here and he loves a good #selfie come and say hi, tag us in your pictures with #NormanatMander and the best shot will win a (giant) #prize”

The sculpture is owned by The Twins FX which is a company that operates in theatrical special effects.

It is animatronic which means it has moving parts and is automated with a voice.

Garry Hardy-Brown, managing director of the Twins FX, said the sculpture performs a show every 20 to 30 minutes where it speaks in a giant’s voice, telling shoppers about what’s on offer at the Mander Centre.

Garry said: “Norman appeared at The Grant Theatre two years ago so this is his second return to the city. He likes the people of Wolverhampton and their unique humour.”

Also taking place during half-term has been the Toddler Play Park which has seen youngsters having fund in the jungle themed castle with slide, ball pit and obstacles.

Other events coming up at the centre include the Makers Market on June 15, which will see artists and makers showcasing and selling their unique works.
